In the quest to create an architectural marvel that stands out not just by day but also by night, the team at Luminicos faced a unique challenge at the Mormon Temple in Arequipa. Tasked with illuminating the temple's dome to emit light outwardly, simulating an internal glow, we embarked on a journey of innovation and creativity. This project is proof of the power of light in architecture and how, with the right technology, even the most complex visions can be realized.
A Unique Challenge Met with Innovative Solution
The dome's internal structure, filled with metal frameworks close behind the glass, posed a significant hurdle. Traditional lighting solutions were out of the question, as they would cast shadows of the metal structures onto the glass. The breakthrough came with the introduction of Folio, a technology so advanced that it could fit into the minimal space available, providing uniform light distribution without revealing the internal obstructions.
Inspirado en la idea de una «ventana falsa» que proyecta luz hacia afuera, nuestro equipo propuso una aplicación inversa de Folio para simular una habitación iluminada desde el interior de la cúpula.
Overcoming Technical Challenges
Among the notable challenges were adapting Folio to the limited space, creating a curved top to match the window's shape, and engineering a custom mounting solution to secure the Folio to the metal structure. The project demanded customization of Folio panels to fit each of the three windows perfectly, with rectangular shapes but curved tops, showcasing Folio's adaptability and precision in execution.
A Profound Visual and Emotional Impact
The final outcome was nothing short of spectacular. The temple now boasts an elegantly illuminated dome, its windows radiating with uniform, elegant light, enhancing the temple's grandeur and bringing vitality to the area. This lighting not only elevates the architectural beauty of the temple but also serves as a symbol of enlightenment and hope.
The Magic of Folio
Folio stood out for its ability to create vast surfaces of light within a minimal thickness, ensuring uniform light distribution with a variance tolerance of up to 3%, imperceptible to the human eye. Each Folio product is crafted with attention to dimensions, luminous flux, color temperature, and shape, delivering consistently excellent results.
